Because of the great success and benefit of these raft trips, the summer 2014 Wounded Warrior four day whitewater trips through Canyonlands now are up to a count of four trips from the previous two!.
The Wounded Warrior launch dates are:
May 6, Special Operations Forces only (Navy Seals, Army Rangers, Marine Recon, Air Force HALO, etc), conducted by Oars of Moab
May 12, female Wounded Warriors only, conducted by Western River Expeditions. Because many of the female Wounded Warriors were victims of rape, sexual assault, and other violence by male soldiers, the May 12 trip will be all female. I felt that having mixed sexes would have a chilling effect upon the women, and deter some from joining us on the river. We are already seeing much interest in and many sign-ups on this trip.
May 30, mostly Cheyenne VA Hospital plus a few other Wounded Warriors, conducted by Tag-a-Long Expeditions
June 6, Salt Lake VA Hospital and a few other Wounded Warriors, conducted by Tag-a-Long Expeditions
I am taking names of volunteer SAG crew members for the above whitewater trips. For those of you not familiar, I take one of my J rigs as a SAG (Support And Gear) boat to accompany the 4 day Wounded Warrior whitewater trips through Canyonlands National Park on the Colorado River, Moab to Lake Powell. These trips each usually consists of about 25 Wounded Warriors and caregivers. My SAG crew is usually 5 or 6, whose duties are to aid the river guides in all aspects of camp set-up and break-down (everything except food prep), manage the SAG boat, to aid the Wounded Warriors if they ask, to generally enhance the trip for the Warriors where the opportunities arise, and to help recover the boats on Lake Powell at the end of the trip..If you would like an enriching whitewater trip with some inspirational combat soldiers, please get ahold of me and sign on for one or more of the trips. I think you will have an unforgettable experience through great country with great people. Although we already have a number of sign-ons, there is still some room available.
We are on the calendar for a 3 day ski camp at Steamboat Springs, everything arranged and furnished by STARS, Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports, January 24-26. There will be 20 to 25 participants, most any level of disability. I hope to have a blind skier this year. This event last year was GREAT, weather was great, Billy Kidd skied us. I expect the same result this coming winter.
